Sea Sports Science Olympiad (ages 11-14). Must have completed 5th grade and be 11 by May 1st.
Spend a week with MarineQuest trying out some fun ocean water sports - including snorkeling, boogie boarding, kayaking, surfing and fishing - while you also learn about underlying scientific principles that can help you succeed in Science Olympiad events. Discover the shock value of boogie boarding when you design and build a wave generator to create electricity. Explore meteorology and learn how to predict the perfect conditions for a big wave while you go surfing. Investigate whether or not the water quality is fine for fishing. Hunt for invasive species while you snorkel along our coast. Kayak to two different bridges and study their structures. Then return to the lab and use your observations to build the strongest boomleaver possible. This camp is sure to be a gold medal winner!
Field trips include: Going to the beach, marsh, intercoastal waterway, fouling station, coquina outcrop, and Center for Marine Science.
Highlights include: kayaking in the intercoastal waterway; boogie board oceanography; shallow water snorkeling to observe coastal erosion; surfing; improve your map skills; learn how to use GPS; use weather instruments; build a model wave generator; try surf fishing; gain practice in at least 6 science olympiad events.
Cancellation policy: To ensure that our camps are of the highest quality, we plan, schedule, and commit to paying for food, housing, transportation, and recreational activities months before summer camp begins. Families typically book their camp months in advance. Therefore, last minute cancellations are particularly difficult for us to fill since most campers have already made other arrangements for the summer. Consequently, we cannot provide refunds if you cancel any time after 4 weeks prior to the start day of your camp session and can only provide a 50% refund if you cancel anytime between 8 and 4 weeks prior to the start date of your camp session. Any cancellations that take place prior to 8 weeks before the start date of your camp session will be charged a $100 processing fee. If you need to change dates (and space is available in another session during the current summer) there is also a $50 processing fee.
No refunds will be given within 4 weeks prior to start date of your camp session.
50% refunds will be given 8-4 weeks prior to start date of camp (50% cancellation fee).
$100 processing fee for any cancellations made prior to 8 weeks before start date of camp.
$50 processing fee for any changes in dates.
*Given extreme extenuating circumstances, MarineQuest will consider a petition for a potential refund.
