Join OLLI for a day trip to Beaufort, NC. Our first stop is Fort Macon State Park for a guided tour of Fort Macon, one of the finest surviving examples of 19th-century military architecture and fortification. Built between 1826 and 1835 to guard the entrance to Beaufort Harbor, this five-sided fort, constructed of brick and stone, was intermittently garrisoned before being seized by Confederate troops in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War.

Lunch: Begun in 1938 as a 12-stool restaurant with a small two-kerosene burner stove, the Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant is today an East Coast institution, known far and wide throughout the U.S. as a famous "must stop" location on the Intracoastal Waterway.

Finally, we'll visit the North Carolina Maritime Museum. The Beaufort museum focuses on North Carolina's cultural maritime heritage, coastal environment and natural history. It is the repository for artifacts from Blackbeard's wrecked flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge, among them cannons, grenades, belt buckles and beads.
